JSTOR Community Collections rights and license information is cataloged at the item level. There is no dedicated place to catalog rights or licenses for the collection as a whole, but rights or license statements can be included in the collection-level description, if desired. For more information about copyright and fair use, please visit our References for Best Practices.
Published Display of Rights for Community Collections
Rights and license information displays on the item-level metadata record for JSTOR Community Collections.
All items published in a Community Collection have the following text published at the bottom of the item-level metadata panel:
This item is being shared by an institution as part of a Community Collection.
For terms of use, please refer to our Terms & Conditions.
In addition to this statement, there are three JSTOR fields available for cataloging rights and license information.
- Rights - This field is designed to hold controlled list values for RightsStatements.org rights statements so that when the metadata is published to JSTOR it will display a RightsStatements.org badge for the applicable copyright status. If you use the JSTOR Template, this field will already be set up as a list field connected to the community “Rights” list. If you need to set up the field in your project to make use of this functionality, see this page.
- License - This field is designed to hold controlled list values for Creative Commons license statements so that when the metadata is published to JSTOR it will display a Creative Commons badge for the applicable license status. If you use the JSTOR Template, this field will already be set up as a list field connected to the community “License” list. If you need to set up the field in your project to make use of this functionality, see this page.
- Rights Notes - This is a free text field for expressing rights and license information. The text can include URLs, but they will not be hyperlinked. Controlled values from the JSTOR “Rights” or “License” lists can be mapped to this field, if desired, and they will publish to JSTOR with the textual name of the controlled rights or license statement, e.g. “NO KNOWN COPYRIGHT” or “Creative Commons: Attribution-NonCommercial”.
