Publishing target types
In your Project Settings, you can create or edit existing publishing targets to publish your content from your projects. There are several publishing target type options to choose from, including:
JSTOR Community Collections
JSTOR’s Open Community Collections initiative unlocks the potential of your institution’s special collections by making them available on the platform researchers, faculty, and students already know and use. You can publish either institutional or public collections to JSTOR.
Institutional Collections in Artstor
Institutional Collections in Artstor will allow users associated with your institution to see your content co-mingled with Artstor Digital Library subscription content. Your institution’s users can access this content freely on-campus, and with a user account when off-campus in order to organize and download this content.
Public Collections in Artstor
Public Collections are freely accessible at library.artstor.org. Unlike Institutional and Personal Collections, Public Collections do not require logging in or campus access.
Personal Collections in Artstor
Personal Collections can be used as a way for faculty to manage their own collections in both Forum and Artstor. Multiple users may have access to catalog items for a Personal Collection in Forum, but the target is designed to publish only to an individual user’s Personal Collection in Artstor. Whenever that user logs into Artstor, they will see their Personal Collection listed alongside any previously existing Personal Collections managed in Artstor. If items are intended for sharing with other users, the owner can create groups in Artstor and manage the visibility of their items.
Omeka
Omeka is an open source web publishing platform developed by George Mason University’s Roy Rozenzweig Center for History and New Media. Publishing to an Omeka target allows your Forum content to be accessed through a fully customizable interface.
OAI
Publishing to an OAI server will allow your collections to be harvested and integrated within other environments, such as institutional repositories and discovery systems. OAI Targets for Discovery Vendors includes more information about publishing to an OAI server.
Creating a publishing target
To create a publishing target:
- In your collection, click the Project Settings button.
- Under the Targets tab, select Add.
- Choose a target type and follow the on-screen steps to configure your target.
- When publishing to JSTOR or Artstor you can configure the following options:
- Access level - Choose whether your collection will be available to the public, users at your institution, or create a personal collection (Artstor).
- Collection Name/Title - Create a name that is descriptive and specific as possible. While there is no character limit, the ideal length is 80 characters or less.
- Collection Description
- JSTOR - Help researchers understand what’s in the collection. Be concise and clear; write in short sentences and short, scannable blocks. Keep the most important text up front, and focus on one idea per paragraph.
- Artstor - This description appears in Artstor above your collection to offer additional context. The character limit is 1,000 characters, and it can be edited at a later time.
- You can include hyperlinks in your description using the following markup in the text of your description. Example:
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.jstor.org">Visit JSTOR</a>
-
- Collection Image/Thumbnail
- JSTOR - Choose an image that best represents the collection.
- 560 by 400 pixel or larger PNG, JPG, or GIF
- You may also include an image caption. Consider including the following information in the caption: creator, title, date, media, institution, and copyright.
- Artstor - Displays next to the description. Some examples of the collection image include an institution's logo or an image from the collection that represents the content.
